Baked Fresh from Scratch

Some of what we do!

About us:

" I always remember the delight as a child visiting the local bakery. The sight of those happy gingerbread men, sticky coloured buns and the smell of fresh bread, gave me such pleasure! "

It is these simple childish pleasures that I have endeavoured to create for my customers.  The chance to take 5 minutes (or two hours) out of their busy schedule to savour a happy family atmosphere and enjoy some time honoured, freshly prepared food – whether the treat of a traditional sticky bun or a sumptuous smoked salmon and scrambled egg executive breakfast served with one of our handmade speciality breads.

However, what gives me most pleasure is serving the wide variety of patrons from the surrounding community who come back time after time whether they be tiny toddlers enjoying a smiley faced biscuit in the kids corner or local tradesmen coming in for a hearty lunch or those who just look for a friendly welcome and a chat over a pot of tea.

I have been so lucky in my little shop in this corner of West Wimbledon - Why not pop in and say hello when you are in the area.

Angela made her dream a reality in1973 – when she and her husband William setup their bakery. William, a master baker, hand moulded bread and bun goods nightly on the premises, while Angela was responsible for the running of the shop. Together they were able to offer a complete service to the local community, and still do!

By the early eighties, Angela and Bill were proud parents to three sons, Neil, Sean and Peter, so the bakery was renamed as Maher and Sons (Bakers)

The business continued to thrive, even through the recession, and by 1996 Angela and William had expanded to include outside catering and wholesale deliveries.  They were therefore thrilled and grateful to be voted by the local community as the first winners of the Merton Award for Retail Excellence.

At the turn of the century, the family invested in further modernisation by removing the old oil powered, stone oven to move the bakery back, as well as extending the bakery and coffee shop in order to improve efficiency and to provide more space for comfortable seating.

The start of 2010 witnessed further refurbishment of the coffee shop to include a Kiddie’s corner and provide much needed extra seating.

Now 37 years on; Angela, William (now retired), family and staff continue to provide customers with the personal touch that can only be offered by a family run business
